Private 5G and WiFi Connectivity for Large Remote Vehicle Storage Compounds

Site-wide, secure, high-speed wireless coverage across a remote high-capacity vehicle compound, delivered without invasive construction or extensive cabling.

At a glance

  • 30 football pitches in size
  • 5,600+ vehicle capacity
  • 1 to 2GB OTA updates supported
  • No cabling required across the site

The Challenge

The customer operates a vast, remote vehicle storage compound supporting thousands of vehicles. Their legacy 2.4GHz WiFi setup had worked for around a decade, but couldn’t keep up with modern bandwidth demands, especially as EVs increasingly need OTA updates of 1 to 2GB per vehicle.

A traditional site-wide rebuild would have meant invasive construction and extensive cabling. Without it, vehicles often had to be moved to hotspot areas, with updates taking up to eight hours.

The core challenge: deliver secure, resilient, high-bandwidth wireless coverage across a very large, remote outdoor site, without disruptive civil works or extensive cabling.

The Solution

A resilient private 5G deployment with a high-performance WiFi overlay.

Industry-leading private 5G technology broadcasts a dedicated signal from a central building across the site, using a site-specific OFCOM-managed licensed frequency to carry the organisation’s own encrypted LAN traffic. Two access points were deployed to remove any single point of failure on a site running 24/7, and devices connect via eSIM, physical SIM, or WiFi.

For devices without native 5G capability, 5G-to-Ethernet adapters were installed on selected lamp posts, connecting to cloud-managed WLAN access points. Traffic is securely tunnelled back to the central building and released onto the correct VLAN, maintaining network segregation and security throughout.

Key solutions and services provided

  • Site-wide resilient private 5G deployment, including frequency licensing
  • Site-wide WiFi deployment without invasive construction or new cabling
  • Enterprise-grade encryption and network segregation
  • Resilient connectivity with no single point of failure
  • Cloud-managed infrastructure with ongoing managed service support

The Results

The site now has high-bandwidth private 5G coverage overlaid with a high-bandwidth 5GHz WiFi network, with WiFi using private 5G as its backbone while 5G-capable devices connect directly. This gives the customer a flexible platform supporting both current operations and future connectivity needs, without a single network cable run across the site.

Conclusion

An initial trial and proof of concept gave the customer the confidence to proceed with full deployment. The resulting solution provides a high-speed wireless network with direct secure connectivity to the LAN through either WiFi (802.11) or private 5G.

The platform is cloud managed and supported by Amillan as part of its ongoing managed service, giving the customer a resilient, scalable, and future-ready connectivity foundation for large-scale vehicle storage, stock management, and OTA update requirements.
